Barfi! selected for Oscars

Barfi! selected for Oscars

The Anurag Basu film will be sent as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards 2013

The Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz starrer Barfi! that released last week has been named India’s official entry to next year’s Oscars. It’s a big victory for this Anurag Kashyap film as it beat 19 other films – including Tigmanshu Dhulia’s Paan Singh Tomar, Soojit Sircar’s Vicky Donor and Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani – to get selected for the Academy Awards 2013.

Barfi! revolves around a happy-go-lucky deaf and mute character played by Ranbir, who falls in love with an autistic girl played by Priyanka Chopra. Ileana makes her Bollywood debut with this movie.

The film has music by Pritam Chakraborty. The heartwarming romantic comedy won over the critics and the audience, and has already earned over Rs 60 crore at the box office. Let’s wait and watch if the film that has been loved in India manages to impress the Oscar jury to get into the final five!

Barfi! Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer earns over Rs 60 crore!

Barfi! Ranbir Kapoor-Priyanka Chopra starrer earns over Rs 60 crore!

Anurag Basu’s heartwarming film didn’t merely win hearts, but also raked in big moolah

Director Anurag Basu’s Barfi! starring Ranbir Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Ileana D’Cruz saw a good opening at the box office, as it made Rs 34. 6 crores in its opening weekend. In fact, the Saturday and Sunday collections were higher than on the opening day, mainly because of good word of mouth publicity and great reviews.

The film continued to be strong during the week and raked in an additional Rs 20 crore by Wednesday. The film has also made Rs 13 crores in the form of overseas collections. On Wednesday it saw a big jump at the BO due to the Ganesh Chaturthi holiday. So this UTV Motion Pictures’ production, which was made at a budget of around Rs 30 crore, has already raked in over Rs 60 crores in just six days. Ranbir’s last release Rockstar, on the other hand, made Rs 50 crores in its first week, while Barfi! did it in just five days.

Thursday saw a slight dip in earnings (Rs 5.65 crores), perhaps because of the Bharat bandh, but the fact that Delhi and Mumbai were largely unaffected helped the film. Trade analysts are hoping that the movie picks up from where it left off on Friday (today).

Trade experts estimate that Barfi! will continue to be strong at the BO over the next week too, especially because of the negative buzz around this Friday’s release – Madhur Bhandarkar’s Heroine.
